Greenish Wedding – About Us (not what you might expect!)
We are Brian and Sandra, a couple whose wedding was not green by any stretch of the imagination! Though we’re neither vegetarians nor environmentalists, we consider ourselves good people who want to do the best thing for the planet and for future generations. We’re just now thinking about bringing our first child into the world, and are wondering what kind of world this will be.
When we were driving home one night, we had the radio tuned in to an interview with someone talking about people buying carbon credits to offset their weddings. We thought, What a great idea!
It made us think back to our own wedding and—although it wasn’t green—we were pleasantly surprised to see that many of the decisions we made actually were good choices for the environment. For example, we decided to have the wedding and reception in the same farmhouse that we and the guests stayed in, cutting back carbon emissions that travel would have created. We also used only local produce in our menu and only local flowers in the decorations and bouquet.
But we realized that we made a lot of choices that weren’t so eco friendly. Our wedding venue was remote, although beautiful, so a lot of guests needed to fly in. We also went the traditional route of using paper invitations—and we used so much paper! And then there were the rings. Where exactly did they come from, and what kind of damage did their production cause? There were just a number of little details like this that we didn’t think about at the time. However, we know in hindsight that attention to these little details would have made our wedding even more enjoyable.
And this is why we created this website. We hope it serves as a resource for couples who want to do their part to make sure that the happiest day of their lives also has a positive effect on the environment. And if you know that your wedding ceremony was not only beautiful but eco friendly, the memories of this day will be all that much more pleasant.
